Types of Seamed Headscarf

Hijab
This is the most common headscarf worn by most Muslim women. It covers the hair and neck, leaving the face visible. It comes in many different styles and colors.

Niqab
This head covering covers the face, hair and neck, leaving only the eyes visible. It is commonly worn by women in Arab countries, but more Muslim women in other countries are choosing to sport this.

Burqa
The term burqa and niqab are often used interchangeably but they are quite different. This headscarf covers everything including the eyes, leaving a mesh to see. This is common in countries such as Afghanistan and Pakistan. Reportedly there were also some Jewish women sporting the head covering in Israel. There are currently 15 countries that ban this head covering, citing security reasons.

Chador
This is a body length garment. It is not secured by anything so the women holds it close with her hands. It is mainly worn in Iran.Recently there has been a surge of international brands that have started to produce headscarves and modest clothing, realizing that there is a large market and demand for modest clothing, especially Muslim women. Nike, Tommy Hilfiger and Uniqlo are some of them.

Uses of Seamed Headscarf

Warmth - Turn the scarf over, put it on your ears and at eyebrow level, straighten the excess part, rotate it a few times, open it, and wrap it on your head. Quite like a wealthy landlord. Very warm in winter.

Decoration - Fold the headscarf into double layers, put it on your head, and pull the hair out. The width of the headband is adjustable.

Headband - Use a scarf to tie your hair in circles. Anyone who knows how to tie a ponytail will do this.

Pirate Hat - Folding and flipping out, after seemingly complicated operations, you will be as handsome as a Pirates of the Caribbean.

Windproof cover - Cover the entire face with a scarf, only exposing the eyes. It is breathable and windproof, and is very effective in deserts, windy days or snow resorts.

Helmet - Lined When riding or rock climbing, it feels bad to wear a helmet and sweat. Tie a scarf on your head as a lining, and all your worries will be solved.

Blindfold - Unless you travel alone, you always travel in small groups no matter how far or near. It is the most common thing for two people to share a standard room.

Seamed Headscarf Fabric

COTTON
Cotton is a soft, durable, natural fiber. It is breathable, versatile and used in many different types of hats. We often use cotton as a liner in our hats that feature a shell in another type of fabric. Cotton hats are often the first headwear purchase that cancer patients make because the benefits of 100% cotton fabric are so well known.
BAMBOO Bamboo is a lesser known natural fiber that cancer patients should become familiar with. It is exceptionally soft and silky in feel. It is also absorbent, pill resistent, durable and has natural antibacterial properties.

Fleece
Fleece is warm, soft, and comfortable. It is easy wash and wear. Because of its warmth, it is best for cool weather. For those who are unfamiliar with the term “fleece” think of your softest sweatpants that you reach for on a cold day.

Terry cloth
Terry cloth is a soft fabric that is most often used in turbans. It is absorbent and a great choice for home, spa, pool or beach. For those unfamiliar with fabric terms, think of traditional towel material.

Wool
Wool is most often used in cool weather garments. It resists water and is made from natural, breathable fibers. It provides excellent warmth and insulation. For those who find wool hats to be abrasive, a soft night cap, such as a lace sleep cap can be worn underneath.

Berber, tweed & corduroy
These fabrics are most often used in cool weather hats due to fabric thickness. These fabrics provide warmth and a wonderful texture that brings a unique element to the hat design. Because some fabrics are abrasive, we line the inside of these hats for a comfortable fit.

Lycra
The addition of Lycra in a fabric allows it to stretch. Lycra allows head coverings to conform to the head securely yet comfortably, returning to its normal shape after being stretched.

How to Choose Seamed Headscarf

Full coverage

When shopping for a Seamed Headscarf, you should be aware of how much coverage this cap/hat will provide with the absence of your Bio hair. Choose a style that will provide good coverage around the entire hairline and into the nape.

Soft materials

For a sensitive, bald scalp comfort is definitely a must! Smooth, soft, and breathable fabrics will feel the most comfortable against your skin. Bamboo and Cotton are very good choices in material. They can be worn year-round.

Seams or few seams

Seamed Headscarf with few to no seams will be less bothersome to a sensitive scalp and will also be more comfortable to sleep in.

Volume

Designs that offer some kind of volume will give an illusion of hair underneath. Try tying a scarf around your cap for added dimension and volume or accessorize your cap with jewelry like broches, pins, or flowers on a clip. Be imaginative!

Ways to Wear a Headscarf

The classic grace
Fold a square seamed headscarf in half diagonally, so it makes a triangle (it doesn't matter if the edges line up exactly). Place the seamed headscarf on your head so the center of the folded edge lays an inch or two behind your hairline, and the point of the triangle hangs down the back of your head. Tie the ends under your chin. Princess grace sometimes knotted the seamed headscarf under her chin, and other times just loosely tied it—it's up to you. Let the ends hang down in the front; or neatly tuck the front and back into the collar of your coat, as princess grace often did.

The glamorous back tie
Follow the same instructions as above, but instead of tying the ends under your chin, cross the ends under your chin, and then bring them back to the nape of your neck. Make a knot and let the ends hang down your back—or tuck them into the collar of your coat.

The preppy headband
Fold the seamed headscarf diagonally into a triangle, making sure the ends line up. Take the point of the triangle and fold it into the center, leaving about two inches of space between the point and the straight folded edge of the seamed headscarf. Moving from left to right, fold until you have one long strip that's about three inches wide. Place the strip a couple of inches behind your hairline, and check to make sure the ends hang evenly. Then knot the ends at the nape of your neck (under your hair), allowing the ends to hang down your back. For more of a 70's look, you can push the front of the seamed headscarf forward so it sits on your forehead, and tie the ends at the back of your head, over your hair, (instead of at your nape, under your hair). Feel free to pull some hair out in the front to frame your face.

The knotted headband
For a modern twist on the prep headband, add a knot to the front: Follow the instructions above, but stop once you've folded the seamed headscarf into a headband-shape strip. At that point, make a knot in the center of the seamed headscarf and place the smooth side of the knot in the middle of your hairline, allowing a couple of inches of hair to show. Make sure the ends of the seamed headscarf are even, and then tie the ends in a double knot at the nape of your neck (under the length of your hair).

The seamed headscarf braid
Fold the seamed headscarf into a headband shape (see above), and set it aside on a flat surface. Then take the top section of your hair (above your ears), pull it back, and secure it with an elastic at the lower-middle back of your head. Wrap the middle of the headband seamed headscarf around the elastic. Separate the rest of your hair into two side sections and start loosely braiding, so the seamed headscarf is being braided with the middle section of hair. Secure the braid with an elastic, and fluff the ends of the seamed headscarf. For a laidback look, muss the braid a bit with your fingers.

The low ponytail
Pull your hair back into a low ponytail, and secure with an elastic. Fold the seamed headscarf into the headband shape, and tie it around the base of the ponytail making a double knot to hold it firmly in place. Let the ends hang down on either side of your ponytail.

Process of Seamed Headscarf

Squaring your fabric
Please do not skip this step. It is a necessary step to ensure success. Squaring the fabric means that you are cutting on the grain lines and are cutting a piece of fabric that is true to its geometric shape. It is always calling squaring the fabric even if you are not cutting a square. In this instance you will be cutting a square and this process ensures that your square is even on all sides.

Measure and cut 26”
With two straight edges on your fabric, you can now measure 26” on all sides. Be sure to cut the selvage edge off before you measure. The first two edges that you will measure 26” on will be your selvage edge and the edge you cut in Step Two. To cut your fabric you will need to lay it out on the floor or a large table. I find using a large foldable cardboard pattern cutting matt makes this step extremely easy to get everything straight. You can purchase one for $22 at JoAnn’s and they are a good investment and last for years.

Iron in your hem
Ironing in a hem is quite easy but you do want to take your time to do it right. I used a 1/2” hem on this project. With the wrong side of the fabric facing up, fold over 1/2” and iron the seam in. Use a ruler or a hem guide to help you keep an even 1/2” as you iron. Set your iron on the cotton setting and make sure to use steam to help press the seam in firmly. You are going to use the crease lines later on to make mitered corners.

Miter the corners
For this scarf I choose to put in full mitered corners. A mitered corner is when your two edges meet at a 45-degree angle. A full miter is when the raw edge of the fabric is fully enclosed in the hem. This is shown in the photo below. Strong press lines from Step Four are helpful. A rotary cutting mat marked with a 45-degree angle is handy but not necessary. Carefully open the folded edges of one corner. Using a ruler, draw a diagonal line between the two points where the farthest press lines intersect, as shown below.

Topstich
Starting in one corner, carefully sew in the hem by topstitching near the fold line. For this project, a straight stich is fine. There is no need to finish the raw edge because it is fully enclosed in the seam. I used the inside edge of my standard sewing foot for a guide. Carefully stich around the corners. You now have a finished head scarf to help you bring style to the barn.

Sew on Trim
I always add trim to my head scarves. I think it creates an even cuter finished product. You can finish two adjoining edges or the whole scarf. You can use any trim, ribbon, or ricrac. Personally, I really like ricrac. Carefully pin your trim on the right side of the fabric centered over the topstitch.

How to Maintain Seamed Headscarf

Folding vs hanging
Should you fold your seamed headscarf or hang them? The answer depends on your space and the material of the seamed headscarf. Folding is a great space-saving solution, but make sure to fold along the seams to avoid creating creases. Hanging is best for silk or other easily wrinkled materials, but ensure to use hangers with enough width to avoid creating a crease.

Storage solutions
From seamed headscarf hangers to storage boxes, we'll introduce you to the best solutions for storing your seamed headscarf. Seamed headscarf hangers are excellent for preventing creases and making your seamed headscarf easily accessible. Storage boxes can be used for off-season seamed headscarf or for organizing by color or material.if you are low on space, the easiest way to store your seamed headscarf is to fold them into a rectangle and turn them into rolls.

Ironing techniques
Not all seamed headscarf should be ironed in the same way. For cotton seamed headscarf, you can iron on either side. But for silk and chiffon seamed headscarf, it's best to iron on the reverse side to prevent shine marks. Use a pressing cloth to add a layer of protection between the iron and the seamed headscarf.

Stain removal
Sometimes, despite our best efforts, our seamed headscarf can end up with stains. But don't worry, we've got you covered. Here's our comprehensive guide on how to tackle different types of stains.

Q: When can a woman take off her hijab?

A: When can a woman take off her hijab? A common misconception about the hijab is that it's worn at all times. In reality, a woman only has to wear a hijab if she's going to be seen by a man who isn't her husband or a blood relation.

Q: What is the difference between a headscarf and hijab?

A: Hijab is more than a simple headscarf. It's more of a concept that encompasses all types of coverage to help you dress in modesty. Hijabs don't just refer to a piece of clothing it's about living a life of modesty and purity.Though not as common today, veils are still worn by some Catholic women. The tradition is not to be seen as a woman displaying inferior status to men. Rather, the veil (or mantilla) covers what is sacred and cherished. The veil is a viewed as a symbol of reverence to God's will.
